The Contagion star revealed that she led a "country bumpkin" life in her childhood, but never felt deprived.
"All I can recall is a happy atmosphere despite the fact money was so tight," Winslet told Reveal. "We never led a wealthy lifestyle and I am grateful for that.
"You just appreciate everything so much more. I am not cynical about anything."
Winslet added that no-one in her family has time for "actors' bulls**t", and that she will raise her two children to value the importance of "getting on in life without complaints".
Winslet's next film, Roman Polanski's Carnage, will be released in the US on December 16, and in the UK on February 3, 2012.
