Lopez began crying and temporarily left the stage as she was surrounded by male dancers dressed as her former lovers Marc Anthony, P Diddy, Ben Affleck and Chris Judd.
An eyewitness described the scene: "She held it together for one song but then ran off stage crying. She only sang a few more songs and she was obviously out of it. Everyone was so sad for her. It was really dramatic."
Lopez has now revealed that she was overcome by emotion because she felt a true connection with her audience.
She told Access Hollywood: "After I sang the song, I was standing there and I realised that I did bare a little bit of my thoughts in the song. I also acted it out, kind of, for the audience and the way they received it was very touching.
"I think that they felt what I felt, which is [that] I'm just a girl like everybody else trying to find my way. I felt like they got that and they understood it. We were all like one at that moment."
Lopez also suggested that singing 'One Love' helped her fans understand her life following her split from husband Anthony.
"I felt like where I am in my life right now – [it was] kind of like walking down memory lane... There are still questions and this is just a journey and it's all okay. It was a nice thing to say," she added.
Last week, fellow American Idol judge Steven Tyler commented that Lopez "still has" Anthony even though they are no longer a couple.
