Johanna Griggs has revealed that she was horrified when her mother had a near-fatal fall recently.

The Australian television presenter, who quit her job as a newsreader last year to concentrate on looking after her children, said that mum Leigh tripped and hit her head on the pavement as she walked in the dark on a winter's morning.

Griggs told New Idea magazine: "The place where mum struck her forehead - the doctors couldn't believe how close she'd come to killing herself. As it was there were signs of concussion, temperature spikes and the most terrible bruising and it knocked us all for six.

"It was frightening because I wasn't ready to be without mum - she's just too important, the biggest constant in all our lives and I couldn't imagine what that would be like. I didn't want to!"

However, Griggs said that she knew her "action woman" mother was fine when she jumped out of bed after only 24 hours wanting to take six of her grandchildren on a bus trip.

"Only the day before we'd been so close to disaster", she added, "yet here we were laughing as a family."

Griggs recently revealed that she experienced "heartbreaking" loss last year when she lost her aunt to motor neurone disease, saying: "She was a strong, vivacious woman with such dignity, who always carried herself so beautifully."
