Saturday Night Live star Darrell Hammond has revealed that he mutilated his body for many years.

Hammond claimed that his mother subjected him to "systematic and lengthy brutality" including electric shocks as a child, which led him to abuse drugs and even frequently cut himself as he grew older.

The comic said that the self-mutilation became so severe that his friends at Saturday Night Live had him briefly institutionalized out of fear for his safety.

"There was cutting backstage... In fact, the week that I did the Gore debates [in 2000], I believe I was taken away in a straitjacket," he admitted to CNN.

Hammond said that at one point he was taking "seven medications" to deal with his various mental health problems, but recently began turning his life around.

He said of his experiences: "I don't feel ashamed of falling down, because I got hit by a Mack truck. The fact is, I kept trying to get back up, and then I did."

In August, Hammond filed a lawsuit over a car accident that left him with an injured back and fractured ribs.

Hammond's memoir God, If You're Not Up There, I'm F**ked is released on November 5 in the UK and on November 8 in the US.
