The Oscar producer, who helmed the Academy Awards 14 times between 1990 and 2008, was discovered in a UCLA parking lot on Monday night.
The Academy released a statement regarding Cates's death on Tuesday, saying that the renowned producer will be missed.
"Gil was our colleague, our friend and a former governor of the Academy," said Academy President Tom Sherak. "He was a consummate professional who gave the Academy and the world some of the most memorable moments in Oscar history.
"His passing is a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry, and our thoughts go out to his family."
Tower Heist director Brett Ratner will produce next year's Oscars telecast, which will be hosted by Eddie Murphy.
Ratner has insisted that he is not nervous about the impending awards show.
