The 'No One' singer visited students at New York City's Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) on Tuesday to personally deliver the instruments.
Keys's return to the school was held in co-operation with Western Union's 'World of Betters', which encourages people to improve the lives of others using just $1,000 (£625).
In her speech to the gathered students, Keys challenged the youngsters to help make life better for those around them.
She said: "A lot needs to be done in the schools around the city and especially here at PPAS... so I'm very happy to be kind of starting this conversation off, as a person that attended PPAS.
"I feel like this was totally a foundation for me and started me off on my path to my dreams, so I'd love to help give back to the kids here who have those same dreams."
Keys has invited people to submit their own ideas on the most useful ways to spend $1,000 on the World of Betters website.
On Thursday, Keys's charity Keep A Child Alive will honour the late George Harrison at a New York City gala.
