The Morning Glory actress told People that she battled with the eating disorder for five years early in her career after a casting director criticised her weight.
Keaton had been offered a role in the Broadway production of Hair under the condition that she dropped pounds, an incident which led to extreme self-esteem issues for the star.
"I don't think it was called bulimia then. It was just this trick you could do. It's a horrible problem. Ugly and awful," she explained.
Keaton, who details her experience with the illness in her new memoir Then Again, credited her recovery to regular sessions with a psychoanalyst.
She recently said that she couldn't help but fall in love with Woody Allen when they dated in the 1970s.
Keaton signed a development deal with cable network HBO earlier this year.
