Stephen Fry has revealed that he tried to commit suicide in 1995.
The incident came after he quit the West End production Cell-Mates, and soon after he fled the country.
"I went into my garage, sealed the door with a duvet I'd brought and got into my car," he says. "I sat there for at least, I think, two hours in the car, my hands on the ignition key."
Fry - who was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder, or manic depression - tells his story in a new BBC documentary. The programme focuses on the disorder, and Fry will interview other celebrities who suffer from it.
The programme will be screened this autumn.
