Matt Baker raises £1.2m for Children in Need with rickshaw trek

The One Show host Matt Baker has so far raised more than £1.2 million for Children in Need with his Rickshaw Challenge.

The ex-Blue Peter presenter completed the 480-mile journey from Edinburgh Castle to BBC Television Centre during tonight's charity broadcast.

The One Show confirmed this evening that Baker had received £1,263,272.93 in sponsorship, with donations continuing to flood in.


Speaking in the final stages of the challenge, Baker declared that he had been "constantly shocked" by the level of support he received from the general public.

"To have the opportunity to actually see people's generosity as they run alongside, showing me their support and giving us their money, is overwhelming," he said. "We haven't gone half a mile without hearing cheers and seeing people donate what they can.

"I never had a target amount of money to raise, but I did set out knowing that just a few pounds can make a big difference. Now I've parked up the rickshaw and we've hit this enormous amount, I know a staggering number of children's lives can now be different."

Baker added that although he had a "brilliant" time on the trek, fans would "never see [him] on a rickshaw ever again".

Baker previously told Digital Spy that his body felt "horrendous" during the arduous bike journey.
