The Annie Hall star opened up about developing bulimia early in her career in her new book Then Again, describing her struggle as "grotesque and gluttonous".
Keaton told The Sunday Times Magazine that she sought help only after the enamel on her teeth started to rot and she began suffering from other health problems.
"[Being thin] was a big lie. And it was horrible. What's amazing is it's over... I never get the urge to do it now," the star insisted.
Keaton continued: "I have friends who were alcoholics, who told me when they were finished that they didn't have the desire. I remember thinking it's not possible. But it is possible.
"It really does alter your life, being an addict. This is how people get reduced and your life implodes in on you."
Keaton previously credited her former partner and Manhattan director Woody Allen with helping her overcome bulimia by introducing structure into her life.
She will next co-star with Kevin Kline in director Lawrence Kasdan's Darling Companion, which is expected to be released next year.
