The ARIA Awards 2011 have failed in television viewer ratings.

The Australian music awards ceremony, which took place in Sydney on Sunday night (November 27), was watched on Channel Nine's digital station GO! by a small audience of just 369,000 people.

However, industry insiders praised the show for pulling in a 7.7% audience share and giving the digital channel its second-highest rating Sunday ever, according to news.com.au.

At the ARIA Awards, singer Gotye and band Boy and Bear dominated, while Kylie Minogue said that she was "proud" to be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame by prime minister Julia Gillard.

As Twitter was not banned at the event contrary to rumours, a number of stars in attendance tweeted throughout the evening, with television personality Richard Wilkins stating the that ARIAs were "back on track" after last year's "disastrous" awards show aired on Channel Ten.

Marc Andrews from Mediaweek Australia described the evening as a "special and respectful occasion", adding: "Any vestiges from the wreckage that was last year's ARIA Awards were well and truly swept away."

The highest ever ARIAs viewer ratings were in 2008, when 1.09 million people tuned in to watch.
