Jim Parsons has signed on to star in Harvey.

The Big Bang Theory actor will lead a Broadway revival of the 1970 play that centres on Elwood P Dowd, a man who befriends an invisible rabbit named Harvey, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Parsons will play Dowd, a role that was made famous by James Stewart. The late actor played Dowd both on screen in the 1950 film version of Harvey and on stage in the original play.

Preview performances for Harvey commence on May 18, 2012, with the opening night scheduled for June 14. The play is expected to run through August 5.

In addition to Parsons, the revival also stars Jessica Hecht and Charles Kimbrough.

Parsons previously appeared on Broadway earlier this year in The Normal Heart.

In September, he won an Emmy for his portrayal of the awkward physicist Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory. His co-star Johnny Galecki was also nominated.
