The former Beautiful South frontman told the Manchester Confidential that taking over the King's Arms pub was "too good a chance to miss".
Heaton explained that he uses the upstairs portion of the house as rehearsal space for his music. "It just came along and we wanted to take it on," he said.
He added: "It's a bit of a fractured community around the pub, with city centre flats on one side and Salford houses on the other. We want to try and bring those people together a bit more."
He also promised to be a "sober landlord", after suffering from alcoholism in the past.
The Beautiful South reformed without Heaton in 2009, but under the name The New Beautiful South.
Heaton performed at the House of Fun Weekender earlier this year, which was curated and headlined by Suggs.
