Prime Minister David Cameron has dismissed Jeremy Clarkson's comments about shooting dead strikers as "silly".

The Top Gear presenter had told The One Show that public sector workers going out on strike on November 30 should be "executed in front of their families".

Speaking to ITV's This Morning today, Cameron said: "It was obviously a silly thing to say and I am sure he didn't mean that.

"I didn't see the remark but I'm sure... it's a silly thing to say."

Clarkson and Cameron are said to be friends and part of the 'Chipping Norton set', a group of Londoners who live in and around the market town in West Oxfordshire.

Other 'members' include former News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks.

UNISON, Britain's largest trade union with over 1.3 million members, has called for Clarkson to be sacked by the BBC immediately for his remarks.

The organisation has also sought legal advice over the comments and said that it is considering making a complaint to the police.
