The comic explained that selling out arenas across the world has left him very little to accomplish in the world of stand-up so he feels it's time to move on.
"I don't want to say I've retired, but this is an important time to shift my energy to something new," Cook told The Los Angeles Times. "If I'm going to do stand-up again...I want to feel like I'm lending something to it."
Cook added: "I'm at the point where it's like, I've done so much with stand-up comedy, and I've taken it everywhere I want to take it."
The Answers to Nothing star went on to acknowledge that he has been criticised by some within the comedy community, but insisted that he is more than proud of his accomplishments.
"To many people, I'm truly not funny. There was a good chunk of time where it was unsettling, but now I understand it. I accept it," he added. "It doesn't define me."
Cook is currently working on a comedy pilot for NBC, which would mark his first starring role in network television.
Answers to Nothing is now playing in US cinemas.
