Alec Baldwin has issued an apology to fellow air passengers following an incident with American Airlines this week.

The 30 Rock star was asked to leave a flight from LA to New York following an apparent dispute with a flight attendant over the use of his phone before the plane took off.

In a letter to The Huffington Post, the actor apologised to his fellow passengers for the delay.

Baldwin went on to say that he had been using his phone while the plane sat at the gate and although other travellers had also been using their devices, he believes he was singled out by a flight attendant on two occasions.

"I guess the fact that this woman, who had decided to make some example of me while everyone else was left undisturbed, did get the better of me," he admitted.

Baldwin also lamented the current state of air travel in his letter, saying economic factors and the aftermath of the September 11 attacks has made flying a very different experience to what it was in the past.

"Airlines in the US are struggling with fuel costs, labour costs, bankruptcies, you name it. It's no secret that the level of service on US carriers has deteriorated to a point that would make Howard Hughes red-faced. Filthy planes, barely edible meals, cuts in jet service to less-travelled locations," he wrote.

"One of the big changes, in my time, is in the increase of the post-9/11, paramilitary bearing of much of the air travel business," he added.

"September 11th was a horrific day in the airline industry, yet in the wake of that event, I believe carriers and airports have used that as an excuse to make the air travel experience as inelegant as possible."

American Airlines previously responded to the incident with its own statement, claiming that Baldwin had been "extremely rude" to its staff and defending the decision to remove him from the aircraft.

Baldwin has since deactivated his Twitter account following the incident.
