The Warrior actor was arrested and served three years of probation after being convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol while on California's Pacific Coast Highway near Los Angeles.
The mugshot which was released following his September 2002 arrest became world famous for Nolte's disheveled appearance.
However, in a new interview with GQ, Nolte said that the picture presented as his mugshot was actually a personal snap taken by one of the arresting police officers who wanted a Polaroid of him.
"I said, 'Come on, you don't really want to ask that, do you?'" the actor recalled, who confessed that he agreed to pose on the condition that the officer shared any proceeds from the shot with his colleagues. "And I let him shoot the Polaroid."
Nolte added that he did pose for an actual mugshot which was never released to the general public.
