The Oscar nominee attended a GOP fundraiser in Washington DC last week to announce his support for former House Speaker Gingrich's campaign.
Busey apparently told guests that although he had never met Gingrich, he knows "what [Newt] stands for".
However, he has now claimed that it was a mistake to offer support to any candidate before any of the Republican primaries begin.
"It is not time for me to be endorsing anyone at this time! When there are the two final candidates, then I will endorse," he said in a statement.
Busey previously suggested that he would support Donald Trump's bid for the White House, but Trump has since backed out of the race.
In November, the star was sued for allegedly drunkenly shoving a fellow passenger at an Oklahoma airport.
