The Mean Girls actress took part in a naked photo shoot for the January/February 2012 edition of the magazine, which was released early after the cover and full pictorial was leaked.
Hefner has now disproved speculation that the leak could hurt sales, revealing on Twitter that Lohan's issue is "breaking sales records".
The magazine is out of stock at many news stands and customers have been purchasing multiple copies, Gossip Cop reports.
Hefner claimed this weekend that he came up with the idea for Lohan's photoshoot, which was inspired by a Marilyn Monroe pictorial that appeared in the first issue of Playboy.
Recalling his response to calls from Lohan's team for a more toned-down shoot, Hefner revealed: "I said, 'We're doing a nude pictorial here. We're going to do it in a very classy way and we're going to do it in a way in which it will not be forgotten'."
Lohan has said that her Playboy appearance gave her confidence.
