The Scottish actor was knocked over by a large wave while shooting a surfing scene in the Northern California ocean, according to ET Online.
Butler was rushed to a local medical centre, but his spokesperson has insisted the actor is feeling better after being treated by doctors.
"He's fine. Very scary. They brought him to Stanford University. More scary than anything," the actor's rep told the website. "For precaution, we all wanted him checked out after it all happened. Came out with flying colours."
This is the second accident Butler has suffered on film sets in recent years. The star recently revealed that he was accidentally shot twice in the head while working on Machine Gun Preacher.
Butler stars in Of Men and Mavericks as a big wave surfer who seeks to ride the infamous Northern California break called Mavericks.
Of Men and Mavericks opens in US cinemas on October 26, 2012. No UK release date has been announced.
