Cyclist Cadel Evans has adopted a baby boy.

The Australian Tour de France winner and his wife Chiara Passerini welcomed the 1-year-old infant earlier this month when they travelled to Ethiopia to complete adoption paperwork.

Passerini - an Italian-born professional musician - told AAP: "Going to Ethiopia was our reason for the early departure from Australia. We came here to bring home our little 12-month-old boy after months of paperwork.

"We always felt the strong wish to adopt, so we decided to start our family through adoption. It certainly wasn't an easy process, but we're very happy to bring our little man home with us in the next few weeks, depending on how the final paperwork goes.''

The couple, who live in Switzerland, hope that their son will be able to join them at home in the New Year.

The boy's name has not yet been disclosed.
