One Direction's Zayn Malik plans to quit smoking

One Direction star Zayn Malik has revealed plans to quit smoking in the New Year.

The 18-year-old has been told off by his management for the habit and hopes to give up in 2012, The Sun reports.

Malik, who is rumoured to smoke up to a pack a day, said: "My New Year's resolution is definitely to quit smoking. I need to do it."

Bandmate Niall Horan added: "I definitely need to use the gym more next year."

Liam Payne quipped: "I ask Niall if he wants to go to the gym and he says, 'I'll see you there' then never turns up, unless he's hiding under the weight bench lifting 40kg and I didn't spot him."

Malik was yesterday named as the celebrity with the tenth best hair in an annual poll from Brylcreem.

Earlier this month, Little Mix star Perrie Edwards dismissed reports that she and Malik briefly dated after her group's X Factor win.
