Ferguson, who recently took in a Maltese Yorkie mix puppy, told The Ellen DeGeneres Show that becoming a parent to the special needs dog has been nerve-wracking.
"[My boyfriend and I] adopted a puppy! We got this very cute dog, this little Morkie, which is a Maltese Yorkie mix. He's very sweet, he's only about five months old," the star revealed to Ellen DeGeneres about the dog.
Ferguson further explained: "A friend of ours had a litter and they could not get rid of this puppy, he was basically the runt of the litter. He has one testicle, he has an extra rib, he has a kinked tail.
"No-one was taking him… My first pet - my dad had pets growing up but for some reason I don't think he trusted us with one. I'm very nervous."
Ferguson named the puppy Leaf after the character he portrayed in the Tony Award-winning play The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
The star recently professed that he loves working on Modern Family because the series has become a "a cultural touchstone for gay marriage".
Modern Family airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on ABC.
