Her great-grandfather Tim Mara founded the New York Giants team in 1925 and later passed down ownership to his son Wellington Mara. Rooney's father Timothy Christopher Mara has served as the vice president of player evaluation for the team as well.
The actress's maternal great-grandfather Art Rooney Sr is also one of the pioneers of professional football, having owned the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In spite of her family's long history with the sport, Rooney admitted to Allure that she never developed the same affinity for football as her father or grandfather.
"I didn't love football growing up, and I'm not obsessed with it. My whole family is really into it," the actress admitted.
She added that she does appreciate the sport's influence on her family, saying: "I do really like it, and of course I appreciate it because of my family - it's a huge part of my heritage."
Mara recently revealed that she admires "so many different things" about her Girl with the Dragon Tattoo character Lisbeth Salander.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is now playing in US and UK cinemas.
