"Fingers crossed that the sun, the daily star and mirror meet the same fate as the news of the world," he said on Twitter.
"Maybe they should keep the sports. I Do love the sports."
Former News of the World showbiz editor Dan Wootton responded: "Silly thing to say Brian. You've also had a lot of support from the British press during your career as well."
McFadden said: "A lot more heartship been caused to me and my family than support."
Wootton countered: "I'm not saying that's right. But to want over 1,000 people to lose their jobs & three newspapers to shut down is going too far."
McFadden replied: "Compassion is a two way street."
The singer later added: "Weird, but I feel guilty about what I said about the papers. I wonder if journalists ever feel guilty when they write things about people?"
McFadden today announced his engagement to DJ and model Vogue Williams with a picture spread in the Australian edition of OK magazine
He split from long-term partner Delta Goodrem last April.
