The Oscar-winning actor was airlifted to a hospital in Miami after an incident occurred as he rode his bike in the Florida Keys, reports TMZ.
"Gene was airlifted (because he is on an island) to the hospital for routine tests," his rep said. "Everything is fine and Gene is on his way home now."
However, the 81-year-old escaped with "a few bumps and bruises" to his head and body, his spokesperson added.
The accident happened yesterday at approximately 3pm.
Best known for his leading role in 1971's The French Connection, Hackman retired from acting in 2004.
