Catherine McNeil has revealed that she needed to take a break from modelling soon after splitting from Ruby Rose.

The 22-year-old Australian model, who was rumoured to be engaged to TV and radio star Rose in 2010, said that she used to feel lost after starting modelling aged only 13.

McNeil told WHO magazine: "After taking time to sort my life out, it finally seems like everything is falling into place. I needed to take a step back so that I could properly understand who I am.

"I had this growing sense of losing myself, and I needed the time to breathe and find my own voice. I started modelling young and I was blessed my career took off quickly. But once I left home I needed to act like an adult, and I wasn't one."

After her split from Rose - who described McNeil as "the sexiest woman I've dated" - McNeil was romantically linked to Dutch supermodel Freja Beha Erichsen.

McNeil, who returned to the catwalk last year, is currently based in New York. She has recently appeared in French Vogue and worked for labels such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Viktor and Rolf and Australian beachwear brand Seafolly.
