Adam Lambert has asked his fans to "give up" their birthday.

The singer, who turned 30 today, took to his Twitter page to tell his followers all about his new charity venture.

He wrote: "Today is my birthday, and for my 30th I'd like you all to help me change the world."

The American Idol star requested that his admirers ditch receiving presents for their own special day and instead put the money toward providing the gift of clean water to those in need.

The ambassador for charity: water explained more about his philanthropic idea in a fan club message.

"It means that when people ask you what you want for your birthday, you tell them that you'd like clean water, and ask them to donate money, 100% of which will directly fund water projects."

The mission statement on the organisation's website explains that "charity: water is a non-profit organisation bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations".

The For Your Entertainment star added: "Wait until you see how amazing it feels, and together, I bet we can raise over a million dollars, which will bring thousands of more people clean water."
