Comedians await Edinburgh award decision

The "brilliant" nominees for the top comedy award at this year's Edinburgh festival are waiting for the judges' decision.

Hopefuls include stand-up comedian Russell Howard, three-man sketch act We Are Klang and "Brummie doctor" Paul Sinha, a gay Asian GP.

The if.comeddies awards, formerly known as the Perriers, were renamed after new sponsor Intelligent Finance. They come with an £8,000 top prize and significant weight in the comedy world – with previous winners including Steve Coogan and The League of Gentlemen.

Nica Burns, the awards' producer, said this year's nominees constituted "a brilliant shortlist" that contained "a huge breadth of comedy talent".

Up for the coveted best newcomer prize are stand-ups Russell Kane, Andrew Lawrence and Josie Long along with God's Pottery – a New York musical act – and sketch outfit Fat Tongue.
