Wayne Carey in drugs bust at maximum security jail

Wayne Carey has been involved in a drugs bust at a maximum security prison.

The Australian Football League player, who was due to give a talk to inmates at Barwon Prison with former Geelong star Ronnie Burns as part of a mentoring programme, was asked to take a routine scanning test for visitors but the results told staff that he had tested positive to traces of cocaine.

According to the Herald Sun, one of the bosses at the jail told Carey that he would be able to enter the facility if he gave them permission to carry out a strip search, but the 40-year-old star refused and left the prison.

Carey, who has battled with drugs in the past, said that he was "shattered" by the incident, but denied that he was asked to do a strip search.

He told Triple M radio: "I can guarantee you I certainly haven't taken drugs and I was more than willing to have any strip search and… wee in a cup to prove that there were no drugs. I would wee in a cup now, I would've weed in a cup yesterday. I was never offered to wee in a cup and was never offered to do a strip search."

Carey claimed that the prison staff told him the scans often "throw false tests and negatives and positives", adding that the whole experience had been a "nightmare". He also insisted that he had no idea how he could have come into contact with drugs.

The sportsman is scheduled to start a new job soon as Triple M's AFL expert. During his interview with the station, he was assured by host Eddie McGuire that his job was still safe.
