Stand-up veteran Phil Nichol has won the top comedy award at the Edinburgh festival with his show The Naked Racist.

His routine, which describes a weekend's fun in Amsterdam, wowed critics and was described as "thermonuclear" and "pin-you-in-the-seats stuff". It won him this year's if.comeddies best comedy prize, renamed from the Perriers after a fresh sponsorship deal.

Nichol's first appearance at the festival was in 1993 with musical trio Corky and the Juice Pigs. He was born in Lanarkshire but moved to Canada, where he is still based, as a child.

Awards producer Nica Burns described him as a "flamboyant comedy character on the Fringe who blew everybody away with an outstanding show."

The if.comeddies best newcomer award, meanwhile, was won by Josie Long. The Oxford University graduate's Kindness and Exuberance show was deemed "off the wall" and "inspired" by judges.

The awards, whose top award comes with a £8,000 cash prize, is now sponsored by finance group Intelligent Finance.
