The comic filed paperwork on Thursday (February 2) to become the Green Party's official presidential candidate in the November election, according to The AP.
Barr said in a statement that she chose the Green Party because she feels let down by the Democrats and Republicans, who have alternated leadership of Congress and the Senate for the last century.
"The Democrats and Republicans have proven that they are servants - bought and paid for by the 1% - who are not doing what's in the best interest of the American people," she declared.
Barr will compete at the Green Party convention in July in order to be named the group's official presidential nominee.
Political activist Ralph Nader famously ran as the Green Party nominee in the 2000 presidential election, where he took in 2.74% of the popular vote.
Barr first publicly discussed entering politics during an appearance on The Tonight Show last August, when she said: "I want to be part of the [presidential] debates, because I want to represent the tax payer.
"In fact, I'm choosing the tax payers as my vice president."
