NBC was reportedly indemnified by the National Football League (NFL) ahead of Sunday's broadcast, as the NFL is responsible for the half-time show.
According to TMZ however, MIA signed a contract with the NFL pledging to compensate the league for any fine imposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
It is claimed that in ensuring MIA signed the agreement, the NFL hopes to dissuade future performers from similar acts in the future.
Madonna was earlier said to be "livid" about MIA's gesture during the performance.
NBC has already issued an apology for the incident and described the "obscene gesture" as "completely inappropriate".
"The NFL hired the talent and produced the half-time show," the network said in a statement. "Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologise to our viewers."
