The 'Million Dollar Bill' star was found dead in her hotel room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton Hotel yesterday (February 11). Immediate reports said that CPR attempts failed, with Houston being pronounced dead at 3.55pm EST.
"At this time, there's no obvious evidence of foul play or cause of death," Beverly Hills Police Lieutenant Mark Rosen told People. "Someone in her entourage found her unresponsive in her room. Our detectives are still in the room, and her body is still here as well."
Initially confirming news of her death, Rosen said that emergency services had received a call from hotel security, to which Beverley Hills Fire and police responded "minutes later".
He continued: "It's unclear who notified hotel staff, because she has quite an entourage here at the hotel. An attempt was made to resuscitate, to no avail."
Asked if there had been any evidence of drugs, Rosen said: "We don't know yet. Her death is under investigation."
A further statement from the police department explained that an investigation is "common practice whenever a death occurs which is unattended and unexpected."
Jennifer Hudson will lead a tribute to Houston at the Grammy Awards, which take place in Los Angeles later today (February 12).
