Mos Def charged after impromptu show

Mos Def has been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after a supposedly unauthorised performance during the MTV Video Music Awards last night.
The rapper arrived at the Radio City Music Hall in New York after the event had started, and performed 'Katrina Clap', a song lambasting the way the Bush administration dealt with situation following Hurricane Katrina last year.
Sources close to the star claim police officers asked members of the entourage whether they had a permit for the show before letting them continue, but then another group of officers ordered them to stop, MTV reports.
Apparently Mos Def did not hear the instruction, so continued performing as police began to arrest his friends.
His publicist Carleen Donovan stated: "Mos Def was unjustly arrested tonight while performing on a flatbed truck in New York City outside the Video Music Awards. Mos Def was not out to break any laws. His only goal was to heighten the awareness of a serious situation that still exists in our country. He does not want people to forget that although it's one year later, the people and cities hit by the hurricane still need the help of the American people."
The star was released from custody this morning.
