The 73-year-old Australian television and theatre personality, who was hospitalised in Singapore last week, said that he tried not to panic when he started to feel unwell.
Newton initially developed a cold, but admitted himself to hospital when he started to have trouble breathing. Doctors later cleared a blockage in the stent in his heart and he remained there for a week.
The star told the Nine Network that he tried "not to get worried" about the problem after being hospitalised with pneumonia last year.
Newton added: "[I was] in the hands of the right people. Life is much better if you can breathe."
The actor also revealed that he will be relaxing for a few more days before returning to work as the Wizard of Oz in the touring production of Wicked the musical, explaining: "The prognosis is that I will be firing on all cylinders ASAP and get back to work and wait for the next drama."
Newton's wife Patti was unable to be with him until the weekend, as she is currently filming this year's season of Celebrity Apprentice in Sydney. Other stars taking part include David Hasselhoff and MasterChef's Marion Grasby.
