Whitney Houston could be honoured with a public funeral service.

A local community leader with ties to the family told New Jersey daily the Star-Ledger that a public event has been tentatively scheduled for the Newark Prudential Centre on Friday (February 17).

It has also been speculated that a private memorial could take place on Thursday to honour Houston, who died at the age of 48 on Saturday, February 11 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Prudential Centre is a multi-purpose arena which has 18,500 seats and hosts around 200 events a year, ranging from sports games to concerts. Michael Jackson's public memorial service was held at the similarly-sized Staples Centre in July 2009.

The Houston family have not yet disclosed any details about the funeral, but have confirmed that it will take place in the singer's home city of Newark.

Houston's body was flown back to New Jersey following a police press conference yesterday which confirmed that the singer was discovered unconscious underwater in her bathtub.

An autopsy has taken place, but the police and coroner's office are waiting for the results of further tests in order to establish exactly how Houston died.
