Jamie Oliver has beaten Delia Smith to the top of a list of the most influential food authorities.

The celebrity chef, who has led a successful campaign for healthier eating, was voted the most important of the country's culinary experts in a survey by The Good Food Magazine.

Editor Gillian Carter said his position was chiefly down to the lobbying. She explained: "Jamie Oliver has really struck a chord with his campaigns to bring school dinners up to scratch and train unemployed youngsters as chefs.

"It's this work, combined with Jamie's down to earth approach to cooking that has secured him his place as world's most influential foodie."

Established kitchen queen Delia Smith made second place in the poll for her many television offerings and recipe book sales exceeding 18 million.
