The actress got emotional as she reflected on coming across the individual during a work trip to Africa a few years ago.
At an event in Milan she broke down as she spoke about travelling with the Damiani diamond company, and revealed it was the reason behind her direct approach to charity work, the Daily Mail reports.
The 53-year-old began working with the organisation in 2009 and launched the jewellery line Maji, which means "water" in Swahili.
Speaking about her busy schedule around her philanthropic work, the Mighty star told an audience she would be teaming up with the legendary film director Woody Allen.
She said: "I have three movies coming out, and now I'm going to do Fading Gigolo with John Turturro and Woody Allen, and then I'm going to do Attachment directed by Tony Kaye."
