O'Neal was reported to have entered a treatment centre to overcome prescription drug addiction on Wednesday, but those claims have now been categorically refuted by the Oscar winner's spokesperson.
"Tatum O'Neal has had back issues, had back surgery and went to a place that could supervise her use of prescribed pain killers until the pain had subsided," her spokesperson told E! News.
The actress's rep added: "[O'Neal] will always seek supervision when taking prescription medication that has addictive potential."
O'Neal has battled with drug addiction in the past, having been arrested in 2008 for possession of crack cocaine in New York City.
The Paper Moon star wrote in detail about her drug use in her memoirs A Paper Life and Found: A Daughter's Journey Home.
O'Neal also documented her struggle to stay sober in the OWN reality series Ryan and Tatum: The O'Neals.
