Susan Boyle on Ricky Gervais 'mong' jibe: 'He has the problem, not me'

By
Susan Boyle has responded to being called a "mong" by Ricky Gervais.

The Life's Too Short comedian used the derogatory term, which refers to Down's Syndrome sufferers, in his 2009 stand-up show Science.

Viewers complained when the set was televised on Channel 4 last October and Gervais was pressured into apologising for using the word, but the joke in question was ultimately cleared by Ofcom in January.

Speaking about the controversy for the first time, Boyle warned that Gervais could risk losing fans by "wasting" his talent on overly offensive material.

"I can take whatever Ricky says, because I'll tell you something - he's the one with the problem, not me," she told The Sun.

"Ricky's a talented man but he's wasted himself with those comments. I think people who liked him are not so keen now."

She continued: "I've had a lot of insults. Do you know what I do? I ignore them. I just get on with my life. Those who have something to say usually have nothing to do."

Boyle previously said that she has learned to stop lashing out over her insecurities.
