The couple announced in January that they were to separate after seven years of marriage.
Opening up about the split to Elle, Klum said that she was struggling to cope with the "craziness" of the situation and the constant scrutiny from the media.
"I feel like I'm in the eye of the tornado. It's emotions inside of your body that are a tornado," she explained. "And then the outside world doing all this craziness - with you wanting it or not wanting it - is another tornado.
"But as hard as it is, so is life. And sometimes I think a curve-ball just comes at you. Instead of something straight that you catch, it hits you in the head from the side that you didn't expect."
Klum added that she had been reluctant to talk about the split because of there being "so many things said about" them already.
She continued: "I don't want to talk positively or negatively about the ups and downs that we had. Every couple goes through things. Unfortunately, we're in the public [eye], so the highs are out there.
"But I don't think it's necessary - especially for our children - to have the lows being printed in magazines and talked about."
However, the model refused to condemn Seal's willingness to discuss their issues in public, saying: "He's a grown man. I can't tell him what to do and what not to do. It's hard."
Sources close to the pair recently brushed off rumours that the couple are due to reconcile, which came about after both were seen still wearing their wedding rings.
