Salma Hayek has opened up about the skin issues that she struggled with in her twenties.

The actress revealed that she experienced bad acne that caused her to go into a "severe depression".

Hayek told Lucky magazine: "When I was 25 and I left being a soap opera star in Mexico to go try to be a movie star in Hollywood and all of Mexico was laughing at me? And I could barely get work as an extra?

"You want to talk about bad skin? I had acne. And this acne was so bad, it sent me into a severe, severe depression. Like I couldn't leave the house. I'd wake up in the morning and lie there and touch my face before I got up, just to prepare myself to look in the mirror!"

Hayek also shared that she turned to food as the the "next stage" to her depression, but her director friend Alfonso Cuarón came to her aid.

"He did not play it down, he did not try to say, 'Oh, you look fine'," the actress revealed. "He said you can't do this to yourself and taught me to meditate, relax. I got myself back together!"

Hayek previously admitted that she will never use Botox because it gives her "the heebie-jeebies".

Hayek lends her voice to The Pirates! Band of Misfits (also titled The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists), which is playing now in the UK and will arrive in theaters in the US on April 27.
