UN spokesman Adrian Edwards confirmed that Jolie's promotion to the role from goodwill ambassador was a result of her years of work for UNCHR, adding: "This is an exceptional position reflecting the exceptional role she has played for us."

Of Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt's financial contributions to refugee causes, he continued: "There is to my knowledge absolutely no connection between any donation of money and this role."

In the last ten years, Jolie has been named the top celebrity do-gooder and best celebrity role model.

She and her fiancé Pitt last year launched new charities in honour of their children.

Jolie claimed in February that "without the balance of doing things that actually matter in the world" through her charity work she would have "a very shallow, horrible life".
