Van Der Beek and his wife Kimberly have an 18-month-old daughter, Olivia, and welcomed their second child, Joshua, last month.
The actor has now told People that having two children is "the best" but acknowledged that it is "a lot of work".
"With one [child], you get a lot more down time," he explained. "With two, down time becomes a thing of the past."
Van Der Beek also revealed that he does not know whether he would like his children to become actors themselves.
"There's no part of me that would ever push them into doing [acting] professionally," he said. "As a kid, it's a great form of expression and it's good to do it in a community level like a high school, but professionally I don't know. I would encourage them to explore all kinds of possibilities."
Van Der Beek's new show Don't Trust The B---- In Apt 23, in which he plays himself, airs Wednesdays on ABC.
