The actor was arrested on suspicion of battery and resisting arrest without violence. He is suspected to have punched a clerk at the Courtyard Marriott hotel in the city, after getting into an argument over a lack of mobile phone reception
A man alleged to be Newton is seen in CCTV footage broadcast on Channel Ten hitting the clerk across the face, then pointing at him. They then disappear briefly behind a pillar before the footage cuts to the pair lying on the floor talking. The two men then get up and continue talking at the desk.
Miami police spokesperson Napier Valazquez said that Newton has alleged that the clerk spat at him during the altercation, but added that the clerk did not retaliate during the incident.
> Matthew Newton on mental health battle: 'I was a lost soul'
Newton's Australian-based lawyer Chris Murphy wrote on Twitter: "Can't cure mental illness with 'You stop that!'. Bipolar sufferers need patience & support. Matthew Newton has mine. Treatment continues."
Newton's entertainer father Bert Newton told reporters on Tuesday morning (April 24): "We're getting through it. It's been going on for a fair while now, but we're strong people, and we have some good things happening in our lives too.
"We're pretty positive people. We would like this to have a happy ending and I'm sure it's still possible there will be a happy ending. We're doing everything we can to try and help that happy ending."
Newton is due to face the new charges on May 11, and will appear in a US court to answer charges from an unrelated incident on May 15.
