"Joe is the finest canine actor I've ever worked with," Selleck told O'Brien.
The 67-year-old went on to say that Uggie worked the cameras too much during awards season.
"As much as I like [Uggie] - and he's a cute dog - he kind of panders a little bit," Selleck said.
"Joe is a golden retriever who loves affection, playing Reggie who has a problem with affection and commitment," he continued. "Joe has layers. Joe has subtext."
Selleck will return for a third season of Blue Bloods next fall.
Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt will premiere May 20 at 9pm on CBS.
