He told us that not only did he love his three-day stint as a teacher, he might even give up comedy to do the job full time.
Naturally, we pressed him on that a bit more, and here's what he had to say.
"I absolutely fell in love with it to the degree that I possibly may retrain... Primary. 4-11. I absolutely loved it," Gilbert told Digital Spy.
"In and out in three days, that's how we film it. I usually get one day having a look around, one day training and I'm in. I totally didn't want to leave. I just loved it. It was just three of the most inspirational days of my life, if that's not too absurd a claim. It was phenomenal.
"There's a lot of crap that goes along with teaching. There's the stress and the pressure. They're downtrodden and beaten up by every angle. They're hammered upon really, politically, by poxy league tables and Ofsted. I just think they're put upon."
He continued: "There can't be a more important role in society than this. These people are absolutely fundamentally shaping the future, in the sense of their impact on those kids.
"I had an impact on those kids; in three days I had kids saying the most moving things to me. It broke my heart. If a teacher's there for years, imagine the impact. And yet they're these knackered, stressed, put-upon people.
"The rest of us should be rubbing their feet, rubbing their shoulders, giving them pep talks, washing their hair, massaging them, to make them as fresh and motivated as you possibly can when you arrive at that school."
Of his comedy colleague Greg Davies's less-than-fond memories of his previous job as a teacher, Gilbert said: "He absolutely hated it. My mother was a teacher, she didn't enjoy it. My father was a teacher and he loved it. Most of my family were teachers.
"It's not for everyone I don't think. Greg was in a secondary school and didn't especially enjoy it. But I found it the most rewarding thing possible."
He concluded: "We should be absolutely cradling teachers as one of the most important things in society, giving them triple pay rise - 300% pay rise.
"We should be looking after them, nurturing them, so they arrive at that school fresh and enthusiastic and motivated for every second of that day. That's what we should be doing, not hammering them with s**ty league tables."
