Magnus Magnusson has been diagnosed with cancer, the BBC has announced.
A spokesman for BBC Scotland confirmed that the former Mastermind presenter was undergoing tests and was in "good fettle" but that he had no more information.
The broadcaster and writer, 77, has had to cancel several public appearances including dates at the Cheltenham and Stratford-upon-Avon literary festivals. He was due to be promoting his new book.
Magnusson, who hosted the quiz show for 25 years, had to have abdominal surgery in 2004.
As well as working on television and radio he is a respected authority on Viking history and has written a number of books on the subject.
