Legendary human rights gig returns

Published Monday, Oct 16 2006, 09:21 BST | By Dave West
Top comedians and musicians united to support human rights in the first Secret Policeman's Ball in 15 years.

The legendary annual gig began 30 years ago with leading lights including John Cleese and Peter Cook and has now been revived by Amnesty International in an attempt to tackle rights abuses.

Last night's performance featured a list of comedians including Eddie Izzard, Graham Norton, Russell Brand and Richard E Grant. They were joined at the Royal Albert Hall by the Zutons, the Magic Numbers, Natalie Imbruglia and others.

The charity has revived the show because it thinks people across the world are being threatened in more ways than ever. Political points were made by guests including Jeremy Irons, who talked about four current cases of rights abuses, and US act Sarah Silverman.

Amnesty's UK director Kate Allen thanked stars for taking part but added that their volunteering was down to "what is happening in the world at the moment".
